Indirect access

Defining indirect access is an important part of granting feature key permissions to a user group.

Indirect access is used to grant users modify or view access to information from modules where they have no direct access.

Direct and indirect access are validated at different times and on different application objects. Direct access is validated on menu items. The menu item can be placed in a menu on the Main menu, or as a menu button on a form's menu button. Indirect access is validated on form and report controls. The practical use and purpose is best described using an example.

Indirect access example

Martin works in customer service as an order taker. This means that he should have access to the order module, both direct and indirect. He does not do inventory management so he has no access to the inventory module. However, this is not a workable situation because Martin will not be able to take orders if he does not know what
is on stock. To resolve the conflict, Martin’s indirect access to the Inventory module is set to Full control.
This will allow him to give him look up information in the inventory table from the sales order form but he will not have access to the inventory module from the main menu. If the indirect access was only set to Read, Martin would be able to see inventory items on existing orders. He would not be able to modify them, or to add new ones.
